Destructive in the best way

As the female parent of a gay son who remembers the discrimination he suffered in his youth, I am happy this mannerly book is available now. If, through my purchase, I am also contributing support for gay rights while competing with the sales of that other book, I am even happier. Dear is something to celebrate, non demonize.

A sweet niggling story about bunnies falling in dear and the importance of voting, all in i.

I would have passed, because I suspected it would exist more of a publicity stunt than story, but I couldn't resist the sound cast: Jim Parsons (Big Bang Theory) as Marlon Bundo the bunny; Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) as Wesley the bunny; John Lithgow (Tertiary Rock from the Sun) as Stinkbug, Jack McBayer (thirty Rock); Ellie Kemper (The Office) as Dill Prickle the hedgehog; Jeffery Garlin (The Goldbergs) equally Mr. Paws-The-Very-Good-Dog; and RuPaul.

Information technology turns out, it was a cute little story, with a solid children's book feel. In the tradition of multi-generational entreatment, information technology has veiled jokes for the older folks and solid messaging for the younger ones. For some reason, it cracks me upwardly that i of the bugs is named Dennis.

I needn't accept worried about the art--Oliver's slice has an animated excerpt of the story and the style is lovely, watercolor style shadings in a more traditional way. The i with the Stinkbug and his white toupee is effing priceless.

When is a rabbit a troll?

At that place's probably a very hot cross bunny at Number One Observatory Circumvolve (the VPOTUS's official residence, illustrated in this book), which is seasonally appropriate for the book'southward release, even though hot cross buns are apparently not as widely eaten during Lent (the 40 days earlier Easter) in the US as the UK.

Hot cross buns also seem apt, given the bizarre and recurring importance of baking (or rather, refusing to do so) in the battle for LGBTQ+ rights, peculiarly spousal relationship equality.

The Pence Version

First (kind of), in that location was a pic book about the Pence family'south pet rabbit, Marlon, written by his daughter and illustrated past his wife: Marlon Bundo'south 24-hour interval in the Life of the Vice President. Information technology's meant to be a child-friendly introduction to the role of the Vice President. From the sample viewable on Amazon, the text is heavy-handed, slow doggerel (with rhyme and metre that don't really work), but the illustrations are pleasant enough.

The opening stanzas are:

Allow me to innovate myself -
I am Marlon Bundo Pence.
I live with my family hither
At the vice president's residence.

Some people call me BOTUS -
A name any bunny would love.
It means "Bunny of the Us" -
A job I am very proud of!

If that doesn't get your preschooler begging you lot to read it again and again, I don't know what volition!

The Gay Bunny Version

Hot on its heels (so hot, it was released a day earlier the Pence i) came this picture book, in which Bundo falls in love with another bunny. But here's the point and the problem: both rabbits are male. Information technology's a 18-carat, inclusive children'southward story almost as much every bit it is earthworks at Pence. There's a proper narrative arc: loneliness, love, an obstruction, and... a happy ending. The pictures are a fragile, colourful delight, and the text is brusk and sweet, largely eschewing overt politics, and without attempting rhyming couplets.

Merely it does skewer Pence. The grapheme who tries to stop the nuptials has a tidy mop of white hair, a collared shirt, and red tie. He is described thus:
"The Stink Problems was In Charge. He was Of import. None of the other animals could quite work out why he was In Charge or how he was Important, but he was."

Ethics of Imitation

This book was heavily promoted by John Oliver on HBO's Last Week This night and it raced up the bestseller charts, apace eclipsing the Pence book.

I's mental attitude to that is probable to be framed by 1's attitude to Pence, and especially his views about the evils of homosexuality. But it's not quite that unproblematic.

Money from the Pence book is going to 1 charity that provides art therapy to children with cancer and another that tackles human trafficking.

On the other hand, all the proceeds from this are going to an AIDS charity and the Trevor Project, a suicide prevention organisation that offers support to young LGBT community members.

(I'll leave aside the difference betwixt proceeds and profits, and the malleability of both.)

Personally, I observe Pence's active hatred of LGBTQ+ and other minorities hateful, and if his family unit produce a children's volume with a political message, even for charitable causes, I think it becomes a valid target for parody, satire, or whatever.

Anyway, Charlotte Pence says she doesn't mind, because both books are raising coin. She has bought this book, and also thinks imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, which wasn't quite the intention, but never mind. (Commendation here and here.)

Love is beloved (equally long every bit it's consensual).

Pastiches and Parodies on GR

Jill Twiss, should be an agile reviewer on GR. Or maybe she is a pseudonym of Manny Rayner's. Or peradventure Manny wrote this! Or maybe it's just a Dickensian pseudonym of John Oliver'due south. (Disappointingly, it seems she's a real private in her ain right, who writes for The Daily Show.)

This volume is a more than than a parody, but information technology is similar many of Manny's most creative "reviews" (see my reviews of his collections, What Pooh Might Accept Said to Dante..., HERE, and If Research Were Romance..., HERE).

He wants to marry the male child bunny he has fallen in love with and all their beast friends go ready for the wedding. Only then the stink bug tries to stop them.

This volume was written by John Oliver, the host of HBO'southward Last Week This evening in reply to a children's volume Mike Pence, current VP of the Usa, has published with is wife.
Mike Pence'southward volume is likewise about a bunny named Marlon Bundo, who shows kids a day in the life of the Vice President of the US. Non bad in full general. The problem is that Mike Pence is a self-proclaimed Christian, conservative, and Republican (in this order, as he likes to always point out). He has promoted "gay cures" and is avidly against abortions.
Therefore, John Oliver and a few of his colleagues and friends seized the opportunity to instead teach children virtually love, tolerance, democracy and friendship.

I have both the audio and ebook because the illustrations are cute and the sound is funny thanks to who recorded the 7 minutes - and enjoyed both. Naturally, every bit it is a book for small-scale children (or people who need to become their priorities directly ... or gay), the ebook or hardcover are amend to illustrate some great points and bring across some of the more subtle jokes (which is why this got one star less). And there are many hidden and non-so-hidden hints and jokes, believe me. Doesn't matter that information technology'south a thin book, it packs a dial!
The other great affair well-nigh this is that all of the royalties become to The Trevor Project and AIDS United.

You lot know, information technology'due south funny. When I was watching the Last Calendar week Tonight with John Oliver episode that talks about this book and I heard him say that this wasn't an adult volume "telling Mike Pence to become fuck himself," I had a moment of amusement because that was literally exactly what I thought this volume was going to exist about. You see, Mike Pence has a pet bunny (BOTUS) named Marlon Bundo that has its own Instagram and everything. The 2nd family as well recently published a book about their bunny's adventures called MARLON BUNDO'S Mean solar day IN THE LIFE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT. This book, A Day IN THE LIFE OF MARLON BUNDO, is published by a staff writer of Last Calendar week Tonight, and if that weren't hilarious plenty, they also published their book a day before and made the bunny gay.

If you didn't know, Mike Pence is notoriously anti-gay and appears to subtly back up conversion therapy, which, if you didn't know, is basically the thought that y'all can educate LGBT+ people into existence straight. In that location's a dark comedy about conversion therapy called Merely I'm a Cheerleader , which is an amazing motion-picture show. RuPaul is in it. (I feel like RuPaul is basically the Kevin Bacon of all things gay - he seems to be connected to everything and everyone of notation.) Then taking his family pet and writing a gay dear story nearly him is really the perfect revenge. Only A DAY IN THE LIFE OF MARLON BUNDO isn't simply a low-blow. The writers of Last Calendar week Tonight could have taken the low road with this one and done something crude (albeit funny) simply they didn't. Instead, they wrote a children'south book almost a gay bunny and the importance of voting for alter. It was really, really cute and I found myself unexpectedly touched.

The proceeds of this book get to the Trevor Projection and AIDS United, which are also peachy reasons to buy this volume (apart from flipping the figurative finger at Mike Pence, of form), but honestly? This is a not bad tool to employ to bring upward sexuality with kids. There's nothing sexual well-nigh this book at all. It'southward just about love, and overcoming prejudice by voting for change. It's very empowering, and very beautiful, and normalizes LGBT+ people without resorting to stereotypes or cheap tropes (there's even a pair of gay kitties in here). It says that it'due south okay to be different, that everyone is different in their own way, and that we should live in a world where these differences should be historic instead of repressed.

I thought this book was really beautiful and I enjoyed reading information technology. You should read it, too.

Yeah, I'g not sure how shit is funny either. I hateful, okay, I suppose if you have been constipated and then you become No ii, it might as good as shit. But what sort of weird tickling shit exists that makes you laugh?

This book by Jill Twiss (John Oliver) is about a bunny who falls in love with some other bunny, some other cadet (I am sorry but a male bunny is a buck and not boy, just saying). and and so Donald Trump/Pence aka Stinkbug tells them they can't marry. Thankfully, Marlon Bundo has a agglomeration of friends, i of whom, the dog, understands democracy. The cool thing is that Marlon's friends are all different in different ways – including a decorative turtle and a hedgehog (honesty, yous take me at hedgehog) who likes to read the endings first to make sure the book isn't besides traumatic (Dude, put down Former Yeller!).

The artwork is beautiful.

Now, I'chiliad certain that some people are going to get upset about this spoof of the Pence family unit book, just you lot know what – I don't intendance. I don't care at all. A one-half star off considering I am a comma purist so really 4.5, just the illustrations are so cute.

Marlon Bundo is a male child bunny. Just not only any bunny. He'southward the BOTUS (Bunny Of The United states). He lives with his grandpa, the Vice President. One day, Malon meets some other male child bunny and falls in love.

He wants to marry the boy bunny he has fallen in honey with and all their animal friends become ready for the wedding. But then the stink bug tries to stop them.

This book was written by John Oliver, the host of HBO's Last Week Tonight in answer to a children'due south book Mike Pence, electric current VP of the United states, has published with is wife.
Mike Pence'due south book is too about a bunny named Marlon Bundo, who shows kids a day in the life of the Vice President of the Us. Swell in general. The trouble is that Mike Pence is a self-proclaimed Christian, conservative, and Republican (in this lodge, as he likes to always bespeak out). He has promoted "gay cures" and is avidly confronting abortions.
Therefore, John Oliver and a few of his colleagues and friends seized the opportunity to instead teach children about love, tolerance, democracy and friendship.

I have both the audio and ebook because the illustrations are cute and the audio is funny thanks to who recorded the 7 minutes - and enjoyed both. Naturally, as it is a volume for small children (or people who need to get their priorities direct ... or gay), the ebook or hardcover are improve to illustrate some slap-up points and bring beyond some of the more than subtle jokes (which is why this got one star more). And there are many hidden and not-then-hidden hints and jokes, believe me. Doesn't matter that it's a sparse volume, information technology packs a punch!
The other smashing thing about this is that all of the royalties get to The Trevor Project and AIDS United.

A very sweet and thoughtful story most love, friendship and republic -- sort of like a phenomenological version Animal Farm, but written for the unproblematic school set. Considering it doesn't affair if you love a girl bunny or a boy bunny, or eat your sandwich astern or forward. Stink bugs are temporary. Beloved is forever.

Once upon a time in a land (alas, not) far away, a very mean man was elected Vice President. He was hateful for many reasons, only ane reason was he hated gay people a lot because they were different (and maybe for other, more Freudian reasons.) Information technology would have been great if the President of this far away land could take realized his error and fired the mean man just, you run across, he was very terrible also.

It was not an optimal situation.

But so the Vice President'south nice daughter wrote a book about her pet bunny and donated the proceeds to charity. This inspired the bard John Oliver (with assistance from the off-white maiden Jill Twiss) to write a book about that bunny, except in this version the bunny was a boy bunny who wanted to marry another male child bunny. And those gain besides went to clemency, an AIDS charity (AIDS United) and a suicide hotline for LGBTQ youth (The Trevor Projection.)

And the 2nd volume far outsold the starting time volume, and maybe it taught some kids that being different is ok and allowed a few LGBTQ youth to love themselves enough to keep going. And THAT is fantastic. It's not enough, but information technology's however fantastic.

And until the day when people worry about real problems and non who can be in love with who, a girl (ok, a middle-aged woman, lets not carve up

hares hairs) won't sit and cry over a book where two boy bunnies found love and everyone who didn't similar it was stupid and could become to Hell.

But allow'south get existent, she'd probably weep regardless considering she'south kind of a pussy.

What's not to similar?

This book is really adorable! I actually like the message of how dearest knows no bounds and how those who come together tin can brand a change in who leads them. The voice bandage is absolutely perfect and is definitely the part I enjoyed the about. The art way is very pretty. Hopefully there will exist a short picture show of this book like at that place was on the Last Calendar week This night clip as I demand it in my life. The story was funny and a skillful unproblematic message for children simply cypher super unique.

Overall, I accept to rate this Audible Audio version a 4.5. The audio is 5 stars as the cast couldn't accept been better and the story is 4 stars. Had the art work been included, like the video sample shown On Terminal Week Tonight with John Oliver, I would have given the book a 5 stars but I take to rate the version I purchased.
